Redesigning Money

The design firm Dowling Duncan is proposing to redesign the American dollar bills. As the website states, "Dowling Duncan wants to renovate America's image abroad." The idea is so that America can show their great aspects and show the world their accomplishments. Also instead of having the old landscape bill, the new one is portrait, which is easier to hand over showing the amount of the bill. The different colours are also designed to help recognise each different colour and amount that it is.

The one dollar bill.

The thinking behind this redesign is clearly stated on the note. The first African America president, Barack Obama is shown on the front. "These bills are designed to be educational and inituitive. The images and text "offer insight into America's heritage."
The graphic elements have been used to assemble this design by using a combination of text and imagery. There is the photo of Barack Obama's head shown in a tone of blues and blacks. The solid blue colour is used at the bottom, then turned into a light shade into nearly white. The text used on the note, informs the users with information about the picture and shows clearly that its the United States money.

My Boardshort Design

Design Brief - We are to design a pair of boardshorts using only geometric or organic shapes. We are to construct a simple pattern that can be repeated to form a yardage. We got given a board short template to lay over our yardage to show a mock up of our design. We have to create 3 colour variations of the design in accordance of three of the following: Summer, Contrasting colours, harmonious colours, winter, spring, monochromatic, Autumn, retro or other.
I chose Winter, Summer and Spring.

This is the Winter version called Amethyst Sky:

This is the Summer version called Rainbow Surf:

And this is the Spring version called Tropic Daize:

This is the 3 boardshorts with their information.

I chose this pattern as the stripes and squares were fun to play around with an make accurate patterns. I think it gives the boardshorts a very interesting look as the pattern is quite complicated to understand. Some of the colours chosen were contrasting and others complimented. There is a very large range of different colours and all the names suit the colours. The reason I chose Amethyst sky is because of the purple repesenting the crytal Amethyst and the black and blue for night and day sky. Also the reason for rainbow surf is because the blue and white represent the waves and the orange and pink are colours from the rainbow. Tropic daize is used for the Spring design as I have used aqua and light green to represent tropical, clear waters.

Footprint Cafe/Bundanon

As part of this course we participated in a design camp at Bundanon, part of Arthur Boyd's properties on the South coast of NSW.

We were asked to design a cafe model that would fit into the environment at Bundanon and suit the layout of the other buildings surrounding. We had to brainstorm and think about essential features and certain aspects to help the environment. This included things such as showing off the views and placing windows in particular sun spots. It had to be made 3D and fit into a larger Bundanon model. At the end we presented our models fitted into the larger model and explained our design.

For my cafe model, I used alot of different materials. I used alot of foam core for the base of the model, balsa wood was used, paints, wire and cardboard.

POSITIVES: I was happy with the height of my building as it shows of the view of Bundanon and compliments the nature surrounding it. I also enjoyed the look of the wire hanging from the roof which was a decoration I thought would suit the building, representing trees and mountains. The colours I used matched the other buildings too.

NEGATIVES: The size of the ground level of the cafe was a bit disappointing for me as I imagined it to be alot bigger. The kitchen was placed on the ground level which would made it a bit difficult to bring the food up and down the stairs.

Blog Banner

For our class task, we have to create a blog blanner. The banner must have a title that is not only representative of our creative work but reflects our own design aesthetic or how we wish to be seen by others.

My process started off with a sketch that i scanned onto photoshop using the scanner at the factory:

I then cut out sections of the wave and placed a rainbow behind it to see through the cut out section. To do this I simply selected the bit I wanted to cut out and deleted it. I created a layer behind my sketch where I inserted the rainbow picture to see through the deleted part:

I then added colour to certain picture I have grown like the sun and butterflies. I did this using the magic wand tool to select certain sections and colour them in with the brush tool. I chose a different type of brush to make sure I didnt get a solid affect which is what I was avoiding. I also added the same brush effect ontop of the rainbow wave to give it the same type of effect as the rest of the picture:

(this is shown without the rainbow layer seen)

I then added certain effects which are found in filter-->filter gallery to sharper the black lines. I also added my name in the bottom right corner fitting in the same type of look to the pictures and ended up with this:
