A Role of Posters in Graphic Design

Design Brief:
Design a Bauhaus inspired A3 poster for an open night at Stella Maris College 2012.

Process:
First we research different types of posters that appealed to us and that we thought were
effective. We also looked into the history of posters and how they have changed over the years.

We focused on researched the Bauhaus design period and the architecture, fonts, furniture and posters that was used with Bauhaus designs. We also made a mindmap helping us understand the role of a Graphic Designer and creating posters. This was an easy and quick way to learn.

Above is the design I created using what I thought were representative to the Bauhaus Design. This includes diagonal lines, the actual Bauhaus font, flat colours and the use of only three and a dynamic layout.

Creating my Bauhaus Poster for Stella Alive:

First we had a look at photos that had been taken of the school itself and chose 3 which we thought were effective and showed a Bauhaus connection. I felt that this photo below related with the diagonal lines and the use of certain colours.

I then cropped the building on the right out with the fence infront and deleted the rest of the photo. I decided to use this building on the right as the main aspect.
I copied and flipped the building onto the other side so it was a symmetrical looking poster.
I added the information onto the poster using diagonals and different colours and this it what my poster finished up as:

Package Your Mug

Brief:

1. Design a commemorative Factory designer mug and have it printed online at Vistaprint.
2. Design, print and manufacture a package to promote your mug at the Design Factory.
Process:
Firstly we brainstormed ideas and limitations for both the mug and the package. We looked at resolution, raster and vector images to see what would look best.
We had to think of three different mug ideas to then be looked at by our principal Ms Commerford who would choose the best one to fit the design brief.

Ms Commerford and I agreed to use a previous drawing I had created from my artbook. I scanned the image onto the computer and edited it through photoshop.

My main concept was growing and changing throughout school/the Design Factory.
The idea of using colours gradually was to show the growing of the person no matter who they are.

For the second part of the brief we were asked to design the packaging for our mug.
We were given a template that we were to alter things into our own design.

I added a photo of myself and a brief introduction, a Stella Maris label, an explanation about the mug and its meaning and then I used part of my design and placed it on the package to create a similar theme as the mug.

I am happy with the finished design as I believe it shows a clear understanding of the factory showing creativity and growth.

Bare Foot Cafe Chalkboard

TERM 4 2010.
For this task, we were asked to find a local cafe and design a drinks menu on a chalkboard to meet their particular style.
First of all we had to visit the cafe, take photos, and examine the style and feel that the cafe creates. We then had to brainstorm ideas for our chalkboard thinking about fonts, colours, images etc that would be appropriate for the cafe.
For my chalkboard, I chose Bare Foot Cafe in Manly.
This cafe is quite small but very popular for their coffees and belgain chocolate.
It used the colours black, green, grey and brown. The brown was mostly the wood that was included in the chairs and the benches.
There was a pattern on the wall of spades and clovers that inspired the shape of my chalkboard.
I ended up shaping my chalkboard into a 3 leaf clover with a stem:
The font I used was simple and quite a normal size. I used the colours white and green:
Overall, my design complimented Bare foot cafe as I used a shape that was seen alot in the cafe and I used two simple colours. The green represented the green tiles placed around the cafe. If I were to place this somewhere in the cafe, I would hang it up straight, in the middle of the wall. Altogether I was happy with my results!!
